On
Saturday, September 20 at 8 PM, we are very pleased to present the
legendary Jesse Winchester. After many entreaties, we have
persuaded the brilliant singer/songwriter to make the long trek
north from Nashville, and grace our stage. It's a rare treat to
hear Jesse, and you will find yourself smiling as you sing along
with many of his songs.
Jesse Winchester was born in Shreveport, LA, and raised in Memphis.
In 1967 he went to Canada to evade the draft, a fact that has lent
his career a certain notoriety. He was discovered there by Robbie
Robertson of The Band. Winchester made his first album, the acclaimed
Jessie Winchester (which included his classic 'Yankee Lady,' 'Brand
New Tennessee Waltz,' and 'Biloxi') with Robertson as producer,
and subsequently toured in Canada as an opening act for The Band.
Despite his popularity in the USA, Winchester was
unable to perform here until the amnesty of 1977, but he continued
to appear in Canadian coffeehouses and concert halls, and in 1976
toured in Europe. After a 1977 performance at the Bottom Line in
New York, he began to tour and record in the USA, while maintaining
his Montreal home and Canadian itinerary. He currently lives in
Nashville, TN.
A reluctant performer, who withdrew from the stage
in 1990 for many years, Jesse Winchester is best known for his songs,
melodically graceful and often wistful narratives that have been
recorded by many artists. The list includes Joan Baez, Jimmy Buffett,
The Everly Brothers, Fairport Convention, Tim Hardin, Emmylou Harris,
Ronnie Hawkins, Nicolette Larsen, Ian Matthews, Tom Rush, Raffi,
Wilson Pickett, Reba McEntire, Wynonna Judd, The Mavericks, Elvis
Costello, Joan Baez, Jimmy Buffett, Jerry Garcia, Jonathan Edwards,
Jerry Jeff Walker, and others. His own performances are in an understated,
contemporary folk style with a country-gospel tinge. Visit
his web site!
All tickets will be $31.80 general admission. Doors
open at 7:15 PM. Come on over early and feel the excitement, buy
a nice Guitartown t-shirt, and mingle with Connecticut's most fun
music fans.
On
Sunday, November 2nd at 3PM, we are very happy to present Tim O'Brien
in concert. A superb singer, Tim O'Brien has made a lasting
mark on American music through his innate instrumental talents and
his wide-ranging tastes. Tim is best known for his melodic and rhythmic
mandolin playing, but he also wields a wicked blues guitar, fiddles
fluidly, and is no slouch on mandola or banjo either. Originally
from Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1978 he started "Hot Rize",
which has earned recognition as one of America's most innovative
and entertaining bluegrass bands.
Tim O'Brien plays, sings, and writes songs with many of the very
best country and bluegrass artists. He won a Grammy in 2005 for
"Fiddler's Green", and has several IBMA vocalist of the
year awards, and recently released the acclaimed solo album "Chameleon".
Tim is a traditionalist in the finest sense, taking the best of
what he has heard and presenting it in his fresh and inimitable
style.

general admission seats. Doors open at 2:00. Come on over early
and browse the lobby, enjoy the refreshments, buy a nice Guitartown

We
are very excited about our upcoming concerts. On Sunday, November
16th, 2008, the Grammy nominated band Cherryholmes
brings their brand of high energy bluegrass to The Little Theater
for an afternoon show. Cherryholmes is a family of six that is tearing
up the bluegrass circuit. This is a rare chance to see them in a
small hall; they have reached the big time very quickly, and we
are thrilled that they agreed to perform for New Haven fans in such
an intimate venue. You can visit their website
to learn more about them.
